Horses of Hoofprint Bay Guide

Horse care: grooming, feeding, and every injury and illness

Updated · Horses

Quick answer

Care is split: hay, water and mucking out are per stable group; grain, grooming, treats and treating injuries are per horse on the care screen (Feed, Groom, Edit Tack, Medical, Move). Groom with the brush and hoofpick to prevent saddle sores and abscesses; treat cuts and scrapes by dragging the right medicine onto the wound (supplies from the town shop), or call the vet. Horses pick up random cuts and abrasions overnight and injuries on rides; untreated ones get worse (infected cut, thrush with hoof abscess…). There's no health bar — each problem shows on the horse. Long neglect or malnourishment ends with animal welfare taking the horse.

Problem Typical cause If untreated
Cut / Abrasion Random overnight; hitting obstacles on rides Infected Cut / Infected Abrasion
Saddle Sores Poor grooming / tack Worse sores, lost prestige at shows
Tendon Injury Overwork — often an untrained staff trainer Long layoff
Lameness Injuries, hoof problems —
Thrush with Hoof Abscess / Hoof Abscess Neglected hooves —
Laminitis Feeding / weight —
Dirty and sick Not grooming Serious illness costs prestige
Malnourished Not feeding Animal welfare removes the horse

Treatment: drag the matching medicine from the house pharmacy onto the wound (buy supplies on the back shelf of the shop) or call the vet and pay the bill. Sure Footed horses get hurt less; Injury Prone ones more.

A daily routine that works

  1. Yard: hay and water to each group, muck out.
  2. Each horse: grain (watch body condition), groom, pick hooves, treat anything on the Medical tab.
  3. Train or ride within the exercise budget; lessons and shows don’t train.
  4. Before town: groomed + show wear.

FAQ

How much grain does a horse need?

Players report 2–3 scoops a day for an average horse; Hard Keepers need more, Easy Keepers less. Body condition in the office ledger goes negative when a horse is underfed.

My horse won't eat hay

A demo-era report; some players say horses eat hay overnight when the fields are closed. Keep hay and water topped up in the yard regardless.

What do treats do?

A little confidence and a little weight. Snacky horses get more confidence from them.

Why is my horse's hoof dirty after a ride?

Trail rides dirty the hooves (added in v0.1.8). Hoofpick before a show — a dirty horse loses prestige.
