Horses of Hoofprint Bay Guide

Do horses die? Age, retirement and getting horses taken away

Updated · Horses

Quick answer

Horses don't die in Horses of Hoofprint Bay. The official FAQ says age is measured in in-game days (turns), not years; old horses eventually retire to the retirement farm, and a horse you neglect for a long time can be taken away by animal welfare. Retired or confiscated horses leave the game. There is no day limit in the full game — only the 25-day demos are capped.

What the developers say

Question Official answer (paraphrased from the pinned FAQ)
Do horses die? No. They retire with age; neglected horses can be removed by animal welfare. Either way they leave the game.
How does age work? In in-game days (rounds), not years or months.
Day limit? None in the full game. The demos are limited to 25 days.

Achievements that mark the milestones

A Forever Home (a horse moves to the retirement farm) and A Whole Life (a horse you bred retires at your yard) are the two retirement achievements; Empty Nest (own no horse at your farm) is the hidden one you get after selling or losing everything.

FAQ

How many days until a horse retires?

Not published officially. Players count: yearling at ~4 rounds, adult at ~12, rideable and breedable to ~180, retirement at ~192. Your starter mare begins at 60. Two days after launch 0.8% of players had seen a retirement.

Can a horse I own be taken from me?

Yes, if you neglect it for a long time: the FAQ says animal welfare may take it. Keep up grooming, hooves and medical care — see the horse care page.

Is there an ending or day limit?

No. The full game runs indefinitely; the developers joke it will break at roughly two million days.
