Yes — the starter is always a mare, and players report she always has the same stats, traits and age; only her colour is rolled. The developers chose a mare so you can breed your first foal early (the February demo already let you breed one or two in 25 days). If you want a stallion or gelding, sell her and buy one at the breeder's sales stable in town. Since the rebalance, starter stats are deliberately low: the first show-jumping class is beyond a fully trained starter, so you begin with Caprilli tests.

Gender (mare), stats, personality traits, age
Coat colour and markings
That is what players report in the “Always a Mare starter?” thread; the developers haven’t posted the exact starter stats, so we label this community-reported.
If you wanted a stallion
Two options players use: sell the starter at the breeder and buy a stallion or gelding, or keep her as your broodmare and breed the horse you actually want — foals inherit coat, patterns and personality from both parents (see breeding).
FAQ
Can I pick my starter horse's gender?
No. Players on the Steam forum confirm it is always a mare. Sell her or buy a second horse to get a stallion or gelding.
Why is my starter so weak?
The May 2026 rebalance lowered starter stats on purpose so breeding for perfect stats is a long-term goal. The October demo and the full game both use these numbers.
Can I breed with my starter mare right away?
Breeding was possible within the 25-day demo, so yes, early. Breeding details are on the breeding page.
